South Africa´s top wines of origin

20 Jul 2010

After a record 239 entries for the fifth annual SA Terroir Wine Awards, three wine estates stood out at this year’s competition with two National Certificate winners each, Kaapzicht (Bottelary ward), Wildekrans (Bot River ward) and Klein Constantia (Constantia ward). Kaapzicht was the top performer with the two ational winners, Kaapzicht Steytler Vision 2007 for Top Cape Blend and  Kaapzicht Merlot 2007 for Top Merlot, as well as two top wines in the Stellenbosch District, Kaapzicht Steytler Pinotage 2007 and Kaapzicht Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 – all from the same vintage.

Wildekrans Estate’s national winners are the Wildekrans Chenin Blanc Barrel Select 2009 for Top Chenin Blanc and the Wildekrans Chenin MCC 2008 for Top Sparkling Wine. The national winners entered by Klein Constantia Estate are the Klein Constantia Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 for Top Cabernet Sauvignon and the Klein Constantia Vin de Constance 2006 for Top Natural Sweet Wine.

The other 2010 National Certificate winners are the Plaisir de Merle Cabernet Franc 2008 (Paarl‐Simonsberg ward) for Top Cabernet Franc, Bartinney Chardonnay 2008 (Banghoek ward) for Top Chardonnay, De Grendel Winifred 2009 (Durbanville ward) for Top White Blend, Diemersfontein Carpe Diem Pinotage 2008 (Wellington ward) for Top Pinotage, Bloemendal Sauvignon Blanc 2009 (Durbanville ward) for Top Sauvignon Blanc, Neethlingshof Malbec 2009 (Stellenbosch estate wine) for Top Malbec, Bon Courage Inkará Shiraz 2008 (Robertson estate wine) for Top Shiraz, Fort Simon Platinum Collection Viognier 2009 (Bottelary ward) for Top Viognier, Signatures of Doolhof Petit Verdot 2008 (Wellington ward) for Top Petit Verdot, David Nieuwoudt Ghost Corner Semillon 2009 (Elim ward) for Top Semillon and Slanghoek Red Muscadel 2009 (Slanghoek ward) for Top Muscat.

For the first time ever a trophy was awarded to the top wine area in South Africa, based on a specific winegrowing terrain that produced most of the wines that went to the final round for a SA Terroir National Certificate, as well as the number of wines that received a National Certificate. The first winner of the Novare Trophy for SA Terroir Top Wine Area is the Wellington ward, with seven finalists and two national winners (Diemersfontein Pinotage and Doolhof Petit Verdot). Welbedacht of Schalk Burger & Sons produced three of the seven national finalists from Wellington.

The other wine wards that performed exceptionally well are Durbanville with six finalists and two national winners and Bottelary with five finalists and three national winners. Since the first SA Terroir Wine Awards in 2006, some wine producers have clearly shown that their terroirs are outstanding for certain specific cultivars. The National Certificate for Top Semillon has been awarded three times to a David Nieuwoudt Ghost Corner Semillon, the Top Sauvignon Blanc three times to a Bloemendal Sauvignon Blanc, the Top Viognier twice to a Fort Simon Viognier and the Top Shiraz twice to a Bon Courage Inkará Shiraz.

Bon Courage has been the top performer since the first competition in 2006, with seven national certificates for different cultivars, sparkling wine and dessert wine, followed by Klein Constantia (five), De Grendel (four) and Doolhof (four). “South Africa’s wineland is a world of wine on its own. In the past five years the entries for SA Terroir Wine Awards have grown from 151 to 239, which is relatively high if you consider the strict wine of origin rules that are applied to truly make this competition an expression of our top terroir wines. It is a great pity that there are certain districts that do not have many wards and therefore less wineries can participate, but we cannot be lenient. Only wines certified as a single vineyard wine, estate produced wine or from a specific ward can participate, and in the judging only quality counts,” says Marius Labuschagne, project leader of SA Terroir Wine Awards.

“It is a great honour and a pleasure for us to be part of the most exclusive wine competition in the world based on origin, as well as contributing with the development of agricultural skills by sponsoring expertise training and transformation at Elsenburg Agricultural College. The sponsorship coincides with Novare’s business philosophy of always being on the lookout for opportunities to be part of the successful development of South Africa’s investment market and economy,” says Marina van Till, Head of Marketing of Novare. Most entries were Sauvignon Blanc (36), followed by Chardonnay (26), Red Blends (22), Shiraz (20), Chenin Blanc (19), Merlot (19), Pinotage (19) and Cabernet Sauvignon (18). The toughest combat in the final round was with the red blends, where eight wines competed and the top three wines were almost equal. The judges were Charl Theron, David Biggs, Dave Hughes, Erika Obermeyer and Pierre Marais.
