A new trophy was created for the annual SA Terroir Wine Awards to give recognition to the area which enters most of the national winners and/or top rated wines, namely the Cybercellar Trophy for SA Terroir Top Wine Area.  To award the trophy the total results of all the entries, as monitored by a chartered accountant from the main sponsor Novare, will be analysed by a panel consisting of the technical coordinator Charl Theron, another judge, project leader Marius Labuschagne and a fourth independent person.

“This is the fifth year of the world’s most exclusive wine competition based on origin and in this time the entries have grown year after year. Novare also more than doubled their sponsorship and is passionately involved,” says Marius Labuschagne. South Africa is the leading New World wine country when it comes to applying the wine of origin rules to display the wine’s terroir on either the front or back label. It is a growing trend in New World countries, especially the United States of America and Argentina.

Only products certified as a wine of origin from a ward, estate or single vineyard can be entered for the SA Terroir Wine Awards.  This year the judges are Charl Theron, David Biggs, Erika Obermeyer, Pierre Marais and Dave Hughes.

In 2010 a presentation package of selected SA Terroir Wine Awards wines will also be put up forsale by Cybercellar.  The closing date for entries is 22 June.
